Asheville Sun Soo Martial Arts
About
Asheville Sun Soo Martial Arts is a traditional Tae Kwon Do school at 800 Fairview Road in east Asheville, run by 9th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster Tony Morris, who actively teaches alongside an internationally certified instructor team and teen assistant instructors who came up through the school's own ranks. A 9th-dan is an extremely senior rank in any martial art and is rare outside Korea - the dojang's depth of instruction reflects that. The curriculum is traditional WT/Olympic-style taekwondo - stances and basic blocks, the Taegeuk poomsae forms, the full range of kicking techniques from front and roundhouse up through spinning and jumping variations, structured one-step sparring, and controlled kyorugi sparring with appropriate protective gear once students have the control to participate safely - paired with modern strength, conditioning, and flexibility training that complements the traditional Korean material. The youth program is unusually broad: dedicated preschool classes for ages 3 and up, kids classes through elementary and middle school, teen classes, an Award-Winning After School Program with structured curriculum and homework support, summer camps with themed weekly adventures, and Kids Night Out events. The dojang emphasizes confidence, leadership, discipline, and life skills as core outcomes - not just kicks and forms. Students from across Asheville, Black Mountain, Fairview, Swannanoa, and the east Buncombe communities make Sun Soo their home dojang. Trial classes are available for prospective students.
