Baxter Karate Dojo
About
Central Park Avenue Karate
Baxter Karate Dojo sits on the Central Park Avenue commercial corridor in Yonkers, just south of the Tuckahoe line, teaching karate to kids who walk in nervous and grow into confident green and brown belts a few years later. The dojo splits its day between adult kickboxing fitness in the early evening and full kids martial-arts classes from preschool to teen, so a parent can train while a child takes class in the next room.
Kids Martial Arts Programs
Children's classes are split into two age tiers, each with a curriculum sized to that developmental window. Programs include:
- Little Dragons, ages 4-6 (introductory karate with listening drills, balance work, and short forms)
- Kids Martial Arts, ages 7-16 (full karate curriculum with sparring, self-defense, and belt-rank progression)
- Adult Kickboxing Fitness (high-energy cardio class on a separate schedule)
What's Included
- Beginner classes enrolling on a rolling basis, no semester start date
- Belt-rank curriculum tracking progress through colored belts
- Coaching staff with long-form karate training background
Experience
The dojo emphasizes self-control, self-defense, and listening over competition trophies. Teamwork and discipline drills sit alongside cardiovascular conditioning, building stamina and flexibility through repetition. Kids who do best here tend to like structure, clear feedback from instructors, and a steady sense of "I learned something this week."
