Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park
About
Dane County's Largest Wetland
Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park is the largest wetland in Dane County - located at the head of the Yahara chain of lakes north of downtown Madison. The park's North Unit (Sherman Ave) is the family-friendly entrance with boardwalk trails through marsh and native prairie.
What Kids Can Do
Elevated boardwalks let kids walk over wetlands without getting muddy - kids spot painted turtles, sandhill cranes, great blue herons, and dragonflies. The 2-mile trail loop is mostly flat. Two ancient Native American conical mounds (Ho-Chunk burial sites) at the park's center - educational signs explain their cultural significance. Native prairie wildflower bloom peaks July-August. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter [marked: heavy mosquito season June-August - bring repellent].
