About

Minneapolis College of Art and Design Brings Its Rigor to Kids and Teens

MCAD is one of the Midwest's most respected art and design colleges, and its Continuing Education youth program lets K-12 students take studio classes on the same Stevens Avenue campus where BFA candidates are enrolled.

Youth Studio Classes

Age-split and medium-diverse. Options include:
- Ages 6-9 and ages 9-12 studio classes
- Animation and stop-motion
- Drawing, painting, comic art
- Puppetry, fiber arts, bookmaking, paleoart
- Teen and Pre-College continuing-ed courses
- Seasonal summer youth camps

What's Included

  • Classes held on MCAD's actual college campus
  • Instruction from MCAD faculty and advanced students
  • Rotating specialty themes (e.g., U of M Raptor Center partnership for nature-inspired projects)
  • Scholarships available for qualified students

Experience

A rare opportunity for Twin Cities kids to take art classes inside a real art college. Paleoart and puppetry alone are the kind of weird-specific offerings you only get from a design school - great for the kid with niche interests that generic art studios don't serve. Pre-College track is a strong portfolio-prep pipeline.
