Monte Sano State Park preserves 2,140 acres on Monte Sano Mountain east of downtown Huntsville - 22 miles of hiking trails, the von Braun Planetarium with two observatories, mountain biking trails, and panoramic Huntsville vistas.
What Kids Can Do
The von Braun Planetarium hosts space shows and stargazing nights with telescopes - perfect for Huntsville's rocket-city kids. Twenty-two miles of trails range from easy Mountain Mist Trail to advanced trails for older kids. North Plateau Loop is the family starter (2 miles). Mountain bike trails for older kids. Picnic pavilions with grills at the Bankhead Pavilion overlook. CCC-built stone shelters from 1930s for historical interest [marked: planetarium shows Friday-Saturday evenings only - check schedule on monte-sano.org].
What's Included
Day-use $5 per person, kids 4-11 $2. Planetarium $5-10 separate. Trails, picnic areas, scenic overlooks all included with park entry.
Experience
Plan 2-4 hours. Almost entirely outdoor - bring water, sun protection, sturdy shoes, layers (mountain cooler than valley). About 5 miles east of downtown Huntsville. Free on-site parking after day-use fee.
