About

Shaolin Kung Fu of Asheville is a traditional Chinese martial arts school on Haywood Road in West Asheville, the city's main kung fu academy with an unusually deep curriculum. The Owner and Sifu, Sifu Miller, holds a Second Degree Black Belt and studied under the personal tutelage of Master Bob Cummings and Elder Master Gary Mullings - a direct lineage that connects the school to an established Shaolin-system family of instructors. The curriculum is rare for a single dojo: more than 30 distinct animal styles drawn from the broader Shaolin tradition, taught alongside the internal Chinese arts of t'ai chi (taiji), pa qua (baguazhang), and hsing i (xingyiquan). That breadth means students who stick around for years move through the major external Shaolin material and then transition into the internal arts for slower, structural, breath-and-alignment-based training - the same pairing taught in classical Chinese martial arts academies. Kids classes welcome students ages 5 and up, with the primary curriculum focused on developing focus, discipline, and respect through traditional Shaolin training. Introductory kids classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 PM, with developmentally appropriate stance work, basic hand sets, conditioning games, and the early animal-style forms as the foundation. Two free intro classes are offered to new students considering whether traditional kung fu is the right fit before committing to ongoing training. The Haywood Road location is convenient for West Asheville, downtown, North Asheville, Candler, and the West Buncombe communities.
