Shaolin Kung Fu of Asheville
About
Shaolin Kung Fu of Asheville on Haywood Road
Shaolin Kung Fu of Asheville is a traditional Chinese martial arts school on Haywood Road in West Asheville, the city's main kung fu academy with an unusually deep curriculum. The Owner and Sifu, Sifu Miller, holds a Second Degree Black Belt and studied under the personal tutelage of Master Bob Cummings and Elder Master Gary Mullings - a direct lineage that connects the school to an established Shaolin-system family of instructors.
Kids Martial Arts Programs
Kids classes welcome students ages 5 and up, focused on developing focus, discipline, and respect through traditional Shaolin training:
- Introductory kids classes Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 PM
- Developmentally appropriate stance work
- Basic hand sets and conditioning games
- Early animal-style forms as the foundation
What's Included
- More than 30 distinct animal styles drawn from the broader Shaolin tradition
- Internal Chinese arts: t'ai chi (taiji), pa qua (baguazhang), and hsing i (xingyiquan)
- Direct lineage through Master Bob Cummings and Elder Master Gary Mullings
- Two free intro classes for new students
- Convenient to West Asheville, downtown, North Asheville, Candler, and West Buncombe
Experience
The breadth means students who stick around for years move through the major external Shaolin material and then transition into the internal arts for slower, structural, breath-and-alignment-based training - the same pairing taught in classical Chinese martial arts academies. The two free intro classes let families decide whether traditional kung fu is the right fit before committing to ongoing training.
