Tempe Shao-Lin Kempo
About
Tempe Shao-Lin Kempo is the Tempe branch of the American Schools of Shao-Lin Kempo, a long-running martial arts system that blends traditional Shaolin kung fu lineage with the structured American Kempo karate curriculum. The dojo is located at 27 W Baseline Rd in central Tempe, accessible from Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Ahwatukee, and the south Phoenix metro. The curriculum draws from classic Shaolin animal styles and traditional Chinese hand techniques on one side and the discipline of structured Kempo belt progression on the other, so students get a mix of authentic kung fu material with the clear belt-track structure that families look for. Kids classes are split into three age tiers: Peewees serve ages 3.5 through 6 with motor-skill games, listening drills, and the simplest stance and hand basics; Big Kids serve ages 7-12 with a fuller technical syllabus including the early forms, partner drills, and beginning sparring concepts; Teens (ages 13 and up) train at a faster pace with the intermediate forms and more contact-controlled work. The school's philosophy emphasizes "winning without fighting" - building the internal confidence and de-escalation skills that prevent conflict, alongside the physical readiness to defend oneself when needed. Discipline, following directions, social skills, and self-defense awareness are woven into every class. Chief Instructor Richard Arnold (2nd Degree Black Belt) began studies in 2007, became assistant instructor in 2010, and head instructor in 2013. Free trial classes are available for new students.
