The Jiu-Jitsu Institute
About
Jiu-Jitsu Institute on Carolina Beach Road
The Jiu-Jitsu Institute sits on Carolina Beach Road in south Wilmington, opened May 2018 by founder and owner Gil Alcocer. Alcocer started martial arts at age 7, served in the Air Force, and began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 23, training directly under the renowned Mendes brothers (Rafael and Gui Mendes - among the most accomplished BJJ competitors of the modern era). The Mendes lineage puts the school in a competitive technical bracket rare for the Cape Fear region.
Kids Jiu Jitsu Programs
The kids program is designed to build confidence, discipline, and self-defense skills in a fun and engaging environment, with children learning essential techniques, improving coordination, and developing respect for themselves and others. Programs include:
- Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (foundational positions, escapes, supervised grappling)
- Teen BJJ (continued curriculum for older students)
- Adult BJJ (Gil Alcocer head instruction, Mendes-brothers lineage)
- Family-first academy framing across all programs
What's Included
- Direct Mendes brothers lineage (Gil Alcocer trained under Rafael and Gui Mendes)
- Founder-led head instruction (no rotating staff)
- 7-year operating history (established May 2018)
- Family-first academy positioning
- Pathway from kids through teen and into adult curriculum
Experience
Gil Alcocer's attention to technical detail comes through in reviews calling him "an incredibly talented instructor/professor with attention to detail second to none." The Mendes-brothers lineage gives the school a competitive technical pedigree that most regional schools cannot match. Pattern fits Wilmington families that want their child trained under direct top-level competition lineage rather than a generic franchise BJJ academy.
