Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (Birmingham)
About
American Sign Language for All Ages
The Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB) Birmingham Regional Center offers American Sign Language (ASL) classes and early intervention services across the community. The center provides one of Birmingham's few dedicated ASL programs open to hearing families who want their kids to learn a signed language.
Programs Offered
AIDB runs classes and services spanning early intervention through youth:
- Early intervention services (birth and up)
- Introductory ASL classes
- Lunch-and-Learn ASL group sessions
- Braille and Assistive Technology classes
- Family support services
What's Included
- Qualified ASL instructors
- Drop-in enrollment
- Birmingham Regional Center location
- Early intervention for deaf and hard-of-hearing kids
- Support for parents with deaf children or Deaf culture interest
Experience
AIDB fits Birmingham families in two situations: those with deaf or hard-of-hearing children who need early-intervention services, and hearing families interested in ASL as a foreign language for their kids. The community-based model means kids learn ASL alongside Deaf community members, preserving the cultural dimension of the language.
