Capitol Hill Arts Workshop
About
Capitol Hill's neighborhood multi-arts workshop
Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) has been running on 7th Street SE since 1972, serving the Hill and surrounding DC neighborhoods. Everything lives under one roof: studios for visual art and ceramics, dance rooms, a theater space, and practice rooms for music lessons.
K-12 programming across disciplines
Year-round classes plus the well-known After School Youth Arts Program (ASYAP) for grades K-5. Offerings include:
- Visual arts (drawing, painting, mixed media)
- Ceramics and pottery
- Dance (ballet, modern, hip-hop, tap)
- Music lessons (piano, voice, guitar, strings)
- Theater and acting classes
- Photography
- Summer camps and after-school care
What's Included
- Materials provided for visual/clay classes
- Professional teaching artists
- Small group sizes by age and skill
- Student performances and gallery showings
- Sliding-scale scholarships available
Experience
CHAW is built like a community center but runs like a real arts school - kids can try multiple disciplines without switching studios. A good fit for DC families who want their child exposed to broad arts training in one walkable spot.
