About

Two-Sheet South St. Paul Community Ice Arena

Doug Woog Arena, formerly Wakota Arena, has been a cornerstone of South St. Paul's hockey tradition since opening in 1962. The arena was renamed in 2015 to honor South St. Paul native and hockey icon Doug Woog. The facility now features two ice rinks and welcomes around 500,000 visitors annually, including youth association play, high school games, regional tournaments, figure skating, and community programming.

Programs for Kids

The arena hosts a full slate of season programming. Programs include:
- Learn-to-Skate lessons across age groups
- Youth hockey association practices and games
- Hockey clinics and skill camps
- Figure-skating events and progression sessions
- Regional youth tournaments
- Public skating sessions with low-cost skate rental ($2)
- Community open skate during Kaposia Days and seasonal events

What's Included

  • Skate-rental at $2 per pair (cash, check, or credit card)

Experience

The arena's hockey heritage runs deep - South St. Paul is one of Minnesota's classic hockey towns and Doug Woog himself produced generations of state-tournament teams. New skaters work on balance, falling safely, and forward strokes; intermediate students add stops, turns, and crossovers. The two-sheet layout supports a heavy practice and league calendar without families competing for limited ice slots.
