Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service refuge spanning the Virginia / North Carolina border, accessible from the Suffolk visitor area just west of Chesapeake. The refuge protects one of the largest remaining intact forested wetlands on the East Coast.

Self-guided trails and seasonal ranger-led programs. Programs include:
- Hiking and biking on refuge roads
- Wildlife observation (black bears, songbirds, butterflies)
- Lake Drummond paddling access
- Seasonal nature programs run by refuge staff
