Urban Environmental Center in Downtown Newark
Greater Newark Conservancy is a nonprofit dedicated to urban environmental stewardship. The Judith L. Shipley Urban Environmental Center - the first urban environmental center in New Jersey - features 1.5 acres of outdoor exhibits including 10 thematic gardens, hydroponic greenhouse, pond, compost center, and chicken coop.
Summer Camp, Youth Leadership & Field Trips
The Conservancy serves approximately 2,000 elementary students annually through structured education. Programs include:
- Summer Camp at the Education Building
- Newark Youth Leadership Program
- STEAM education events
- Family cooking classes
- School field trips (10 themed gardens)
- Plot-It-Fresh Community Gardening
- Farm-to-School nutrition lessons
