Iowa Spirit Taekwondo
About
Iowa Spirit Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial arts dojang at 1975 N Ankeny Boulevard in central Ankeny, offering both Traditional and Adaptive Taekwondo programs for ages 5 and up. The "adaptive" track is a thoughtful, less common offering that lets students with disabilities, sensory differences, or specific physical needs train taekwondo in a structured curriculum tailored to their abilities - a major commitment from the school and an attractive option for families needing accessible martial arts instruction. The mainstream kids taekwondo program follows the WT/Olympic-style curriculum that's recognized in Kukkiwon-affiliated dojangs worldwide: stances and basic blocks, the Taegeuk poomsae forms, the full range of kicking techniques (front, roundhouse, side, axe, spinning, jumping), structured one-step sparring, and controlled kyorugi sparring with proper protective gear as students advance through the kyu and poom belt ranks. The school's curriculum and culture are anchored in the five tenets of taekwondo - courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance, indomitable spirit - which are woven into how children handle setbacks at the dojang, at school, and in family life. Character and life-building lessons sit alongside the physical fitness and self-defense skills as core program outcomes. The N Ankeny Blvd location is on the main north-south Ankeny corridor with easy access for Ankeny, Saylorville, and the north Polk County corridor. Trial classes are available.
