About

Urban River Park Through Downtown Richmond

James River Park System covers 600 acres along both banks of the James River through downtown Richmond - one of the largest urban river parks in the United States. Reedy Creek is the system's headquarters with Visitor Center, trails, and rock-climbing access.

What Kids Can Do

The Reedy Creek Visitor Center has hands-on river-ecology exhibits and trail maps. Twenty-plus miles of trails connect across both banks - the Pipeline Walkway runs above class-IV whitewater right in downtown for dramatic views. Four boat ramps for kayaks and canoes. Two rock climbing sites for older kids and teens. Belle Isle (connected by foot bridge) has tide pools, swimming holes, and Civil War history. Wildlife viewing includes bald eagles, herons, and snapping turtles [marked: Pipeline Walkway closes during high water - check river level before driving up].
