Purgatory Chasm State Reservation
About
900-Foot Glacial Chasm With 70-Foot Granite Walls
Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton preserves a 900-foot glacial chasm bordered by 70-foot granite walls - one of New England's most unusual geological formations. The Chasm Trail descends into the gorge for a dramatic kid-friendly scramble.
What Kids Can Do
The Chasm Trail (0.5 miles) descends into the gorge through tight passages, over boulder fields, and past named features like Devil's Pulpit, Devil's Coffin, and Lover's Leap. Kids climb on granite boulders with help from parents. Charlie Loop (1 mile rim) gives the same views without the scramble - stroller-friendly. Visitor Center has hands-on exhibits on glacial geology. Picnic shelters and playground at the trailhead. Visitor Center open Memorial Day-Columbus Day [marked: Chasm Trail strenuous and unsafe in wet/icy conditions - check posted warnings].
What's Included
Free day-use of all trails, picnic areas, and playground. Visitor Center free during seasonal operation.
