Wachusett Mountain State Reservation covers 3,000 acres around the 2,006-foot summit of Mount Wachusett - the highest peak in eastern Massachusetts. The Hitchcock Visitor Center anchors the family experience with hiking, biking, and panoramic summit views.

What Kids Can Do

The paved summit road climbs to the top (open seasonally) for car-friendly families - or kids can hike up via Pine Hill Trail or Bicentennial Trail (each 1.5 miles, moderate). Summit panorama shows Boston skyline on clear days. John Hitchcock Visitor Center has hands-on flora/fauna exhibits and ranger talks. Trails wind through old-growth hemlock and hardwood forest. Wildlife includes black bear, white-tailed deer, fishers, and over 130 bird species. Winter skiing at Wachusett Mountain Ski Area (separate operator) [marked: parking 28 spaces at Visitor Center fills weekends - arrive early or weekday].
