Rock Canyon Trailhead Park
About
Mouth of Rock Canyon - Provo's Climbing and Hiking Hub
Rock Canyon Trailhead Park marks the mouth of Rock Canyon at the base of Squaw Peak. The 20-acre trailhead park has a small playground, restrooms, and direct access to one of Utah Valley's most popular family hiking and rock climbing destinations.
What Kids Can Do
The gravel canyon trail starts here and runs 2 miles up Rock Canyon along a perennial stream - flat enough for kids to walk the first half mile. Limestone walls draw climbers - kids can watch experienced climbers tackle 200+ established routes. Picnic tables along the lower trail give shaded creek-side lunch spots. Playground and small open lawn at the trailhead for younger siblings while older kids hike or watch climbers [marked: Rock Canyon Trail can have rockfall - stay on marked trail and watch overhead in spring thaw].
What's Included
Free day-use. Restrooms, picnic tables, playground. Climbing free for those with own gear - no on-site outfitter.
Experience
Plan 1-3 hours for trailhead plus first-half-mile of canyon. Mostly outdoor - bring water, sun protection, sturdy shoes. About 4 miles east of downtown Provo at the canyon mouth. Free on-site parking, fills quickly summer weekends.
