About
South Philadelphia Tennis Association at Barry Playground
The South Philadelphia Tennis Association (SPTA) has been delivering urban tennis programming since 2011 with a "Fun, Friends, & Fitness Through Urban Tennis" approach. Summer camps and lessons run at Barry Playground on Johnston Street, where SPTA operates the public courts as its home venue. The association is a USTA-affiliated chapter.
Junior Tennis Programs
Programs serve kids ages 6-14:
- Summer Camp at Barry Playground - week-long sessions for ages 6-14
- Private lessons for individualized instruction
- Group lessons by ability level
- Social and competitive programming alongside instruction
What's Included
- Court time on Barry Playground's outdoor courts (free public courts)
- Coaching from SPTA volunteer and pro instructors
- Age-appropriate balls and racquets for younger players
- Community-pricing model rooted in nonprofit urban tennis mission
Experience
SPTA's urban-tennis identity emphasizes accessibility - pricing stays low through the public-court model, and the social atmosphere fits families who want their kids playing alongside neighborhood friends. Summer camps are the primary entry point; weekly clinics fill out the school-year calendar.
