About

125-Acre Constructed Wetland on Paynes Prairie's Edge

Sweetwater Wetlands Park is a 125-acre engineered wetland built 2015 to filter stormwater before it reaches Paynes Prairie. The park has 3.5 miles of crushed-shell trails along levees through marsh cells where wildlife congregates in concentrated numbers.

What Kids Can Do

Kids spot alligators sunning on banks within 20 feet of the trails - dozens visible on any visit. Wild horses from Paynes Prairie herd cross the levees regularly. Three hundred bird species pass through including roseate spoonbills, anhingas, painted buntings, sandhill cranes, and limpkins. The boardwalk to the observation tower gives panoramic views into the marsh. Self-guided birding sheets at the kiosk [marked: peak alligator and wading bird viewing November-April - heavy mosquitos May-October].
