The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley is a 34-acre university garden in Strawberry Canyon with one of the most diverse plant collections in the world - 10,000+ types of plants from all six continents, organized by region of origin.
What Kids Can Do
The Garden of Old Roses, Asian Garden bamboo grove, and Cactus Garden each offer different sensory experiences. Children's discovery activities include scavenger hunts at the entrance kiosk. The redwood grove has trees over 100 feet tall - kids walk under canopy. Hill paths offer views of the Bay through the gardens. Family Days throughout the year include planting workshops and naturalist-led tours [marked: closed Tuesdays - other days 10am-5pm].
What's Included
Admission $15 adults, $7 kids 5-17, free under 5. Scavenger hunts, all garden access, and self-guided tours included. Family programs and workshops priced separately.
Experience
Plan 2-3 hours. Almost entirely outdoor - some uphill walking required. Bring water, sun protection, sturdy shoes. Stroller possible on main paths but some grades steep. Paid on-site parking. Free shuttle from UC Berkeley campus.
