About

Pittsburgh Penguins Training Facility and Public Rinks

UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex is the official training home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, opened in August 2015 in Cranberry Township just north of Pittsburgh. The complex pairs NHL-level practice ice with UPMC Sports Medicine outpatient services and runs the Penguins Skating Academy for community learn-to-skate and youth hockey.

Programs for Kids

The Penguins Skating Academy uses USA Hockey's only endorsed learn-to-skate curriculum. Programs include:
- Learn to Skate USA classes for ages 3 and up (year-round)
- Waddlers Learn to Skate where parents join tots on ice
- Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey
- Penguins Skating Academy hockey skill development
- Power skating clinics
- Private skating and hockey lessons
- Youth hockey clinics and league play
- Public skating sessions
- Adult Learn to Play (after forward/backward skating + hockey stop)

What's Included

  • Two NHL-size indoor ice sheets (Penguins practice ice)
  • Locker rooms used by NHL players
  • Coaching staff including Penguins development coaches
  • Skate-rental and pro shop on site
  • Small-group instruction ratios in beginner classes

Experience

Skating on Penguins practice ice with certified Learn to Skate USA coaches is a strong draw for families across western PA. Younger Waddlers students bring a parent on the ice; older skaters progress into Learn to Play Hockey and the Penguins Skating Academy pathway. Adult Learn to Play prerequisites (forward/backward skating + hockey stop) gate the adult track to skaters with basic edges.
