Greene Valley Forest Preserve
About
1,425 Acres With a 190-Foot Scenic Overlook
Greene Valley Forest Preserve packs 1,425 acres of woodlands, prairie, wetlands, and a 12-mile trail network. The signature attraction is a 190-foot-tall scenic overlook offering bird's-eye views of the Chicago skyline on clear days.
What Kids Can Do
The scenic overlook stairs (open weekends May-October only) climb to a Chicago skyline view 25 miles east. The 540+ native plant species along the trails earn it status as one of DuPage County's most botanically diverse sites. Twelve miles of trails mix dirt, crushed limestone, and paved sections - kids can bike, hike, or scooter. Youth-group campground bookable for Cub/Girl Scout overnights. Off-leash dog area separately fenced [marked: scenic overlook open only weekends May 1 - October 31, 1 hour after sunrise to 6pm, weather permitting].
What's Included
Free day-use. Trail map at kiosk. Picnic shelters reservable through DuPage Forest. Overlook ranger-staffed during open hours.
Experience
Plan 1-4 hours. Almost entirely outdoor. The overlook is a steep climb (149 stairs) - older kids enjoy the challenge, strollers stay at the base. Free parking at multiple access points. Restrooms at main parking lot.
