Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve
About
1,829 Acres of Tallgrass Prairie
Springbrook Prairie is the largest restored tallgrass prairie in DuPage County - 1,829 acres of grassland, marsh, and savanna alive with bobolinks, harriers, and grassland sparrows. Five miles of crushed-limestone trails loop the prairie.
What Kids Can Do
Kids walk or bike the flat 5-mile loop watching grassland birds nesting in waist-high prairie grass. A spotting scope at the trail kiosk lets young birders look at hawk perches from a distance. Two streams cross the trail - good spots to watch for muskrats and turtles. The off-leash dog area is fenced separately. Model aircraft fly weekend mornings from a designated field [marked: prairie tallgrass best viewed June-September - winter visits show prairie burn patterns instead].
What's Included
Free day-use. Trail map at kiosk. Restroom at main parking lot. DuPage Forest Preserve District runs occasional naturalist-led prairie walks - schedule on dupageforest.org.
Experience
Plan 1-3 hours depending on loop choice. Fully outdoor - bring water, sun protection, sturdy shoes. Mostly flat, stroller-friendly main trail. No shade on prairie section, so morning visits in summer. Free parking at 83rd St lot.
