Lake Waco Wetlands
About
180-Acre Engineered Wetland
Lake Waco Wetlands is a 180-acre constructed wetland built by Waco as a mitigation project when Lake Waco raised. Now functions as a research and education site with boardwalks, observation platforms, and a visitor center on the lake's north shore.
What Kids Can Do
Boardwalk trails wind across open water and emergent marsh where kids spot turtles, frogs, alligator gar, painted buntings, and herons. Observation decks face peninsulas where ducks and shorebirds congregate. The visitor center hosts interactive exhibits on wetland ecology - magnification stations, life-cycle dioramas, and water-quality sensors kids can touch. Self-guided scavenger hunt sheets at the center [marked: visitor center closed weekends - trails accessible 24/7].
