Skidaway Island State Park
About
588 Acres of Coastal Estuary
Skidaway Island State Park covers 588 acres of maritime forest, salt marsh, and tidal creeks bordering the Skidaway Narrows. Six miles of trails plus a 30-foot observation tower over the marsh make it a top family nature spot south of Savannah.
What Kids Can Do
The Sandpiper Trail boardwalk loop (1 mile) is the easy starter - kids spot fiddler crabs, oysters, and herons in the marsh. The Big Ferry Trail adds 3 miles past Confederate earthworks and a moonshine still ruin for older kids. The 30-foot observation tower opens panoramic views to a horizon of salt marsh. Junior Ranger packets at the office let kids earn badges. Campground hosts owl prowls and night hikes seasonally [marked: Junior Ranger program runs daily during summer - other seasons by request].
What's Included
Day-use parking $5 per vehicle. Trails, observation tower, and playground free with parking. Junior Ranger packets free at the office. Camping, group shelters, and ranger programs priced separately.
Experience
Plan 2-3 hours for trails plus tower. Mostly outdoor - bring sun protection, water, bug spray (heavy mosquitos spring-fall). Sandpiper Trail stroller-friendly, Big Ferry not. About 25 minutes south of downtown Savannah on the Diamond Causeway.
