Tennis + Education Nonprofit in Central Harlem
Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program (HJTEP) has run year-round youth tennis out of Harlem since 1972. It is a nonprofit that pairs court instruction with academic tutoring and wellness support, serving around 1,200 NYC kids each year.
Programs for Kids Ages 5-18
HJTEP welcomes any child age 5 through 18, from beginner first-touch sessions to advanced tournament training. Programs include:
- Year-round afterschool tennis with academic enrichment
- Summer camp on Harlem courts
- In-school tennis instruction partnered with NYC public schools
- Free community tennis clinics
What's Included
- Court time on indoor and outdoor surfaces
- Coaching from staff coaches
- Academic support and wellness programming alongside tennis
Experience
Players come for the tennis and stay for the community. Many alumni move on to high school and college teams. The mission combines competitive instruction with mentoring and resilience-building, so kids leave with both forehands and life skills.
