About
Community Development Cooking Club and Learning Kitchen in West Village
The Learning Kitchen is the youth and family cooking arm of GenesisHOPE, a Detroit community development organization operating from 7200 Mack Avenue in the West Village/Islandview area.
Kids Programs
- The Learning Kitchen Youth Program - grades 3-8 (roughly ages 8-13)
- Southeastern Cooking Club - kids and family cooking sessions tied to GenesisHOPE's food access work
- Six-week course format: weekly nutrition lesson, an interactive cook-as-you-go demo, and a food tasting
- Free SNAP-supported track for eligible families, with ingredients provided
What's Included
- Free participation for SNAP-eligible families
- Take-home ingredients available with grocery-assistance opt-in
- Evidence-based curriculum focused on raising fruit and vegetable intake
- Both in-person and virtual session options
Experience
Not a private-pay cooking school - the program sits inside a broader community development mission (health equity, food access, Fresh Rx). Best fit for Detroit families looking for ongoing nutrition-anchored cooking education rather than a one-off camp, especially those who qualify for the free, SNAP-funded track.
